Be Filled With the Spirit

God wants your personality to be filled and overflowing with his Spirit, so here is the purpose of this session, to be able to…

1. Explain the relationship between God’s Spirit and the human spirit.
2. List Four facts about being filled with the Holy Spirit.
3. Identify two purposes for being filled with the Spirit, and the way God accomplishes each purpose.
4. Give steps to being filled with the Spirit.

WE ARE SPIRIT AS WELL AS BODY AND SOUL:

1. As spirit, you are able to be aware of yourself and to fellowship and work with God. Why do humans understand the things of man? (1 Corinthians 2:11)
2. What relationship with God does the Holy Spirit bear witness to through our human spirit? (Romans 8:16)
3. Not only does the Spirit work in you to do his will, but gives you the desire to accomplish his will (Philippians 2:13)
4. Who has received the Spirit? (Romans 8:9)
5. The Spirit gives you the capacity to be aware of yourself, you can fellowship with God, and you can work to accomplish his purposes.
6. Human spirit and the divine Spirit are two different things. God’s Spirit enters your personality through your human spirit. You allow him to enter in or may shut him out (Revelation 3:20). Opening the door brings peace to your soul.
7. If the Spirit is not in control (filling the disciple) this person has an “I problem” as a natural man. The Spirit does not invade a person but must be allowed in.

GOD’S WILL MEANS SURRENDER AND CONTROL:

1. What does Ephesians 5:18 tell you?
2. What does it mean to BE filled?
   • Passive voice – something that is done to us, we can’t do it to ourselves.
   • Present tense – you are being filled right now.
   • Continuous action – you are to keep on being filled, it’s not a one-time experience.
   • Imperative mood – it is a command to be filled.

4. What are the results of being filled?
   • Ephesians 5:19

5. God has a double purpose for us being filled.
   • God wants to develop Christ-like character in your personality (1 Thessalonians 5:23)
   • God wants to empower you to do his work in the world (Acts 1:8, 4:31)
6. God growing fruit of the Spirit into your life (building up your character)…
   • Galatians 5:22-23
   • 2 Peter 1:5-8
7. If God empowers you for his work, how has he gifted you?
   • Romans 12:6-8
   • 1 Corinthians 12:7-11
8. Jesus said his followers will be channels of living water to the lost (John 7:37-39)
9. How to be controlled by the Holy Spirit:
   • Confess known sin (1 John 1:9)
   • Present every member of your body to be a righteous instrument in God’s hands (Romans 12:1)
   • Ask God to fill, control, and empower you (Luke 11:13)
