The first step in discipleship is evangelism; the second step is follow up. Follow up is simply “spiritual pediatrics,” the care and protection of an infant.
I. ENSURE PROPER CARE AND PROTECTION:
- Go over again carefully the plan of salvation: what do the following verses reveal about God’s plan of salvation?
- 1 John 5:11-13
- John 3:16
- Romans 3:23
- Romans 6:23
- Romans 5:8-10
- Romans 10:9-10,13
- Acts 26:20
- Luke 9:23
- Pray for and with him/her.
- How do the following prayers of Paul deal with growth and maturity?
- Ephesians 1:15-23
- Ephesians 3:14-21
- How can we effectively intercede for others (How do we know for what to pray) (1 Corinthians 10:13)?
- Visit him/her soon and frequently.
- What is the most critical time in the life of an infant?
- A new believer needs encouragement, walk with them!
II. ENSURE THE PROPER DIET:
- Consistent devotional time.
- What was one of the habits of Jesus relating to prayer (Mk 1:35)?
- What do the following mean to you?
- Adoration
- Confession
- Thanksgiving
- Supplication
- Bible reading.
- How does 1 Peter 2:2 relate to new Christians and the Word of God?
- It is best to read small sections and meditate, then memorize one of the verses that has special significance to you.
- Bible study: personal and corporate.
- This teaches them to feed themselves.
- Character studies, topics, doctrines, chapter studies, etc.
III. ENSURE LOVE AND AFFECTION:
- Invite them to your home for meals and events: be a part of the family.
- What does Hebrews 10:21-25 say about Christians gathering together, and why?
- Read Mark 3:14.
- Why did Jesus appoint the twelve?
- How do you see this verse in relation to discipleship?
IV. ENSURE AN ATMOSPHERE OF ACCEPTANCE:
- They should be able to talk to you about anything, without the fear of being misunderstood or rejected.
- What is the key to this atmosphere of acceptance (1 Peter 4:8)?
